Ministries

As a place of worship, learning, growth, fellowship and service we have established exciting opportunities
for ministry through Ministry Work Area Teams that care for the membership and reach out to the community.

Meet Our Stephen Leadership Team

One of the programs of care and mercy here at Cory United Methodist Church is Stephen Ministry.  This ministry serves the need for one-to-one lay care for those inside the church and outside the church.  In conjuction with the church council, there is a special group of people who run this ministry.  They are our Stephen Leaders.  They have gone through an intensive seven-day training course and are equipped with the tools that they need to ensure that this ministry runs smoothly.

Livesteen Carter, Ph.D.

Livesteen shares responsibility for coordinating awareness building, training, continuing education, referrals and supervision of Stephen Ministers.  She also coordinates information seminars about Stephen Ministry.  Livesteen brings to the Stephen Leadership Team extensive experience in organizing people and resources.  She is a retired public school administrator who served as Chief Academic Officer and as an elementary and High School Principal in a large metropolitan district.  Livesteen will apply her educational experience to make sure Stephen Ministers have the best training possible, are kept up-to-date on special topics and ensure that their training is applied in the best way possible.

Carrie Ross-Shelton, M.D.

Dr. Ross-Shelton brings to the Stephen Ministry Leadership position, her experience of many years being a teacher and mentor of high school students, pre-med college students, medical students and physicians in training. She also has the experience of caring for and nurturing her patients and their families while she practiced Internal Medicine both in private practice and as a part of the Faculty and Attending of the Case Western Reserve University Medical School System, the Meridia Health System (Huron Hospital) and the University Hospital health system. (UPCP)

Presently she continues this caring and nurturing spirit at the NASA Glenn Research Center. (Singleton Health Services)

She has been a faithful member of Cory UMC since 1997. During that time she has participated on the Finance Committee, the Pink Tea Committee, Cory’s Pictorial Directory Committee, and the Church Council. She also constantly lends her expertise and support to members of the congregation when asked and, as she perceives the need.

Additional Ministries

Fellowship Work Area Ministry Team

This ministry works as a liaison between individuals and the church community to establish opportunities to
fellowship and participate in fun activities.  It is also designed to provide support, care and nurture to the
shut-ins and new members of the church.

Worship Work Area Ministry Team

This ministry coordinates the Sunday worship service and additional worship services so that worshippers
will have an experience that is spiritually meaningful and transforming.

Tape Ministry

Persons are kept in touch with their church family through this ministry that provides audio copies of the
Sunday morning service to the sick, shut-ins, and visitors.  The copies are also available to others at a minimal cost.

Shawl Ministry

Using the power of intercessory prayer, this group prays for persons with special needs while knitting
them a garment that will be intertwined with love and support.
